With the beginning of the era of hybrids, this type of car became more popular, due to its economy, at first it was a rare and expensive car. Nowadays, a hybrid installation under the hood is not surprising. Hyundai Sonata is a very famous and elegant car model. But the latest revision of the Sonata got interesting, Hyundai released the Sonata hybrid.

Exterior of the new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2016

Comparing the 2016 Hyundai Sonata to the 2012 model, it looks like a completely redesigned exterior and interior. The new hybrid is more reminiscent of the regular 2015 model. It also features features from Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion.

Compared to the 2011 Sonata, the front end of the hybrid is open and more attractive. A large radiator grille can be either from strips or into a grid, depending on the previously specified configuration of the buyer.

The large front bumper occupies the entire front of the car, which is not very convenient in case of repairs, many parts will need to be removed, including the radiator grill, fog lights and front optics, since part of the fasteners are held on the bumper.

The front optics are made with the latest technology and include an adaptive system. The essence of such a system is to help the driver when turning the car or automatically switching high and low beams. So, for example, when the car turns, the headlights automatically turn in the direction of the turn, thereby helping the driver understand the situation on the road at night. Daytime running lights are installed on the top and bottom of the optics.

In the lower part of the bumper there are foglights, based on the latest generation LEDs, they are clearly visible even in the worst weather. Their dimensions allowed not only to increase the illumination area, but to make a beautiful design and improve the aerodynamics of the Sonata Hybrid.

Aerodynamic holes with chrome inserts in a circle were placed under the foglights. The Sonata Hybrid's lower bumper was also made open with aerodynamics. For an additional fee, front optics washers are installed on the bumper.

The Sonata's bonnet is reminiscent of a Ford bonnet, curved and closed over the front fenders butt-to-face with the front bumper.

The side of the Sonata Hybrid is reminiscent of the 2012 Sonata, with a curved strip above the handlebars from the front wheels to the rear feet. Despite the new technologies, the handles on the doors remain classic, they open as before on the mechanics. Although many manufacturers are planning to switch to sensory discovery. At the bottom of the doors, the same curvature remains, which serves both aerodynamics and design. If, upon purchase, an additional chrome option was ordered, then the entire bottom side will be decorated with a chrome strip, like many other parts of the Sonata Hybrid's body.

The rear-view mirrors are painted in body color, turn signal indicators are installed from the outside, and the signal indicators of the blind zone system are installed from the inside.

Characteristic that distinguishes the Sonata Hybrid from the regular model is the inscription on the front right fender in the area of the wheel. On the left side of the front fender, the designers have placed a charging socket for the Plug-in Hybrid. The blue drive lettering on the lid says that charging is only electric, a hole for refueling was placed on the rear left fender. As you can see, unlike the well-known hybrid models, where most of the electric and fuel holes are located next to each other, in the Sonata Hybrid they were made separately.

The rear end of the Sonata Hybrid is also somewhat reminiscent of a Ford and Camry, with rear dimensions extending from the rear fenders and onto the boot lid. The stops are based on LEDs that are clearly visible and will last for more than one couple of years. The classic Hyundai emblem is located in the middle of the trunk lid, and the Sonata and Hybrid lettering is located at the bottom of the trunk lid, which additionally indicates the electrical installation.

The curved lower bumper gives the Sonata a stylish shape, while the lower bumper is accentuated by a black splitter that conceals the tailpipe.

A spoiler is installed on the top of the lid, matching the body color. The rear window has a stop follower and a shark fin antenna. The Sonata's roof can be either panoramic or with a sunroof.

The dimensions of the Sonata Hybrid are not small:

  • length is 4855 mm;
  • hybrid width 1865 mm;
  • height 1485 mm;
  • wheelbase 2805 mm.

By body color, the manufacturer offers:

  • silver;
  • White;
  • Navy blue;
  • light blue;
  • black.

In what other body colors the Sonata Hybrid will be available, the manufacturer has not yet indicated. The volume of the trunk is 440 liters, the weight of the car is 1660 kg. The volume of the fuel tank is 60 liters.

There will be three trim levels available: Limited, SE and Plug-in Hybrid. The latter will go on sale in Europe in the second half of 2016. In terms of wheels, the Sonata Hybrid will be fitted with 16 "or 17" alloy wheels with 205/65 or 215/55 tires.

Aside from the plug-in hybrid front fender, the design is excellent, aerodynamics is excellent and build quality is on par with Toyota or Ford.

Sonata Hybrid Salon

The interior of the new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is no less surprising. The front panel retains the features of the previous model. The large front panel is well thought out both in shape and in the location of the control buttons.

In the middle, there is an 8 ″ touchscreen display, which displays the image from the rear view camera, navigation system, audio system and other useful functions of the Sonata Hybrid. Below the display there is a control panel for the hybrid system, audio control, driving mode selection and hybrid menu control.

Even lower is the climate control panel for two zones, as well as the control of heated seats, steering wheel and windows.

Unlike the style of the latest car models, where the dashboard is made in the form of a large display, in the Sonata Hybrid it is based on analog instruments. A TFT LCD display was placed between the tachometer and the speedometer, which displays the state of the engine, shows the distance traveled and other indicators of the car.

The tachometer of the Sonata Hybrid indicates not only the number of revolutions, but also the driving mode. So from the hovers there is a battery charging mode, an Eco mode and a normal one from a gasoline engine. Additionally, another sensor is installed, which shows the battery charge, in the same way as the fuel level in the tank.

The Sonata Hybrid starts up with the Start / Stop button located to the right of the steering wheel. The steering wheel is made in the classic Hyundai shape, covered with leather, it grips well in the hands. Steering wheel multimedia controls help the driver control the audio system, navigation maps and other functions.

The upholstery of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is not to say that it is at a height, and is made with full leather upholstery, but nevertheless, in addition to plastic, there are inserts from wood and leather, which emphasizes the interior of the hybrid.

The buyer will have access to a salon in the following color:

  • Gray;
  • beige;
  • Navy blue.

According to the designers, it is planned to add black and white trim colors. The rear seats remain unchanged and are designed for three passengers. The Sonata Hybrid electric package allows the driver to easily adjust the seats for himself and enter the memory for three different adjustments, as well as the power windows installed on 4 glasses will quickly and easily open any window.

Sonata Hybrid Specifications

This model does not stand out with a special variety of engines or a choice of gearboxes, since it is a Hybrid. The Sonata Hybrid will be powered by a gasoline engine paired with a hybrid setup. Under the hood is a 2-liter GDI DOHC unit with 16 valves and 4 cylinders. The power is 192 hp. and the electric motor is 144 kW. Maximum torque 6000 rpm.

Acceleration of Sonata from 0 to 100 km / h will take 9.1 seconds.At the rear of the car, a battery for a hybrid installation at 270 V was placed, thereby adding an additional 3 hp to the power. The engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with torque transmission to front-wheel drive.

The fuel consumption of the Sonata Hybrid in the city is 6.4 l / 100 km., Declared by the manufacturer, but according to user measurements, it is slightly higher and amounts to 6.9 liters. Outside the city, the Sonata Hybrid will eat 3.7 liters. But still, according to the statement of independent experts, the consumption outside the city is about 5.5-6.2 l / 100 km. In the combined cycle, 4.7 liters will go away, although experts have stated a figure of 4.9-5.2 l / 100 km. On the electric motor itself, at a speed of up to 60 km / h, you can drive 40 km without recharging and spending gasoline. The maximum speed of the Hyundai Sonata is 260 km / h.

As a conclusion, we can say that for such a volume of the Sonata engine, fuel consumption is very good, the power is also quite good, although in comparison with the previous model it is less. The automatic transmission keeps the gearshift mode well and transmits torque without loss.

Hybrid safety

The first thing I wanted to pay attention to is the hybrid engine, since at speeds up to 60 km / h they run silently, Hyundai installed a sound simulator on the Sonata Hybrid, which reproduces the sound of the engine. This helps a lot in the safety of the car, as it can warn pedestrians about a driving car, in another way it is called VESS (Virtual hybrid engine sound system).

Auxiliary systems for the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid for the driver can be called blind spot system or in another way BSD (Blind spot detection)... It will warn you about a car driving from the side or an obstacle that is not visible in the rearview mirrors.

Sonata electronic stabilization system ESC (Electronic stability control), will help keep the car on tight turns and bring the car back to its original trajectory.

HAC (Hill-start assist control) will help you to easily move downhill, without going backwards, thereby not causing damage to the cars behind. At night, when turning into a corner, you may not notice some obstacles, but thanks to the adaptive headlights that can turn along the trajectory, the driver will see that he is in a dark zone.

Also worth noting are parking sensors, a smart boot lid system, rain sensors and light sensors. All these systems not only make the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid easier to drive, but also make it safer.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid pricing policy

Considering that there is a hybrid setup under the hood, you shouldn't count on the price of a couple of thousand dollars right away. The starting price of the Sonata Hybrid SE trim starts at $ 26,000. Sonata Limited Hybrid, richer configuration will cost from $ 30,100.

With the chrome kit and the Ultimate package, the Sonata Hybrid starts at $ 35,765. For comparison, the 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid will cost $ 33,400.

Despite the hefty price tag, many experts and current hybrid users say the money invested will quickly pay off in saving gas.
