The article describes in great detail with step-by-step actions and photographs the procedure for replacing the main fuel filter. It also provides tips and practical advice on safety.

The fuel filter is designed to clean the fuel before it enters the combustion chambers. When the driver presses on the gas, the filter controls the supply of both fuel and air to the engine. And the composition of fuel and air should be as high quality as possible. In order for the process to run perfectly during mixing, ignition and combustion, the mixture must be very clean. This is what a fuel filter is used for.

When should you replace the fuel filter?

There is no exact deadline for replacing the fuel filter. Manufacturers recommend replacing it every 60-90 thousand kilometers. But the replacement can happen both faster and later. You will have to change the filter if it is ineffective. This can be determined if the car at high speed began to move in jerks, troit, if starting off, the car stalls and starts with a stretch. Also, if the filter is clogged, the car may not start at all.

Replacement can be done using the manufacturer's recommendations. Replacing the fuel filter regularly will not damage your engine, it will only get better. But if you cannot afford it, then replacing the filter, when using high-quality fuel, can be done every two years (it is worth considering the behavior of the machine). But since the quality of the fuel is not one of the highest ratings, it is better to replace the "purifier" more often. The fuel filter prevents engine damage. Therefore, it is easier to change in a timely manner, and not to repair the engine later. When choosing a filter, you should consider its quality. Branded fuel filters will not clog injectors and carburetor so quickly, they will last longer. Most cars have a fine filter that protects against smaller debris and moisture trapped in the fuel. Replacing the fine fuel filter must be carried out regularly to avoid clogging, which will lead to damage to the injectors.

Security and tools

Also, when replacing the fuel filter, you need to think about safety. The best option for replacing it is the street. Because the gases released from fuel are much heavier than air, and can accumulate in rooms and provoke a fire. It is best to work with protective gloves and goggles so that gasoline does not get on the skin of the hands and eyes.

You can replace it at the service center, or you can try to do it yourself. To do this, you need basic tools: pliers, wrench, screwdriver. Some machines require a ratchet and socket wrench. If it is very difficult to get to the scrubber, then a flashlight and a jack will not interfere.

The following will describe in detail how to make a DIY replacement. This is not difficult. The whole procedure took place on a VAZ 2110 car, it is identical on other brands.

Procedure for replacing the fuel filter:

1. The first step is to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. This is done to prevent ignition of fuel vapors.

2. Then it is necessary that the pressure in the power supply system was reduced. Without lowering it, fuel will spill everywhere. Therefore, put the parking brake on the car and place the gear lever in neutral.

3. On the back seat, remove the cushion, unscrew the bolts and remove the cover.

4. There you will see a block with wires, it must be disconnected by pressing the plastic latch.

5. Then start the car and wait until it stalls due to lack of fuel.

6. Turn on the starter for three seconds and then disconnect the fuel line.

7. Having reduced the pressure, proceed further. We remember how the fuel filter was installed, how all the bolts were screwed, since if installed incorrectly, the filter will not protect your engine.

8. On both sides of the fuel cleaner, unscrew (loosen) slightly the nuts on the hose ends.

9. Also slightly loosen the wiper holder fastening.

10. Completely unscrew the nuts on the hose ends, taking into account that the fuel will spill out a little. So that it practically does not leak out, the filter can be wrapped with some kind of rag.

11. Completely free the wiper from the holder and remove it.

12. On the hose ends, remove and check the O-rings. If they are damaged, they should be replaced.

13. Install the new filter in the reverse order, taking into account that it must be installed so that the arrow on it points in the direction where the gasoline flows.

14. Connect the fuel pump wiring harness and battery terminal to the wiring harness. Install the seats.

After all this, you need to start the car, but do not be afraid if the car could not start the first time. It does not start due to the fact that the pressure has been reduced. You need to start the car several times for the pressure to return to normal. After that, the car should start.

By changing fuel filters in a timely manner, you will extend the life of your engine, and it will serve you trouble-free for many years. And the trip by car will be comfortable.
