The official start of the Frankfurt auto show is scheduled for September 2019, however, some manufacturers decided not to wait for this date and declassify their new items in advance. Among these cars was the new generation Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe 2020. Not so long ago, the German manufacturer showed an updated standard model of the new generation GLE, so he did not delay with the coupe variant either. The new Coupe received an updated design, an enlarged interior, improved aerodynamic characteristics, a new multimedia system and, of course, power units.
If we compare the new generation of Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe 2020 and the one currently on offer, then the new product has clearly grown in size. For comparison, we present the data in the table below.

In addition to the added volume of the luggage compartment, the total volume of various niches in the cabin for storing small items has increased. There is also another plus, the loading height of the luggage compartment has decreased by 60 mm, although in the configuration with air suspension this problem is solved at the touch of a button. The system automatically lowers the vehicle by another 50 mm.
The new crossover is based on 19 ″ -22 ″ alloy wheels. As for the aerodynamic characteristics, and the manufacturer has definitely improved them, the air resistance coefficient has decreased by 9%. This effect is achieved by lowering the rear roofline and increasing the inclination of the windshield.
The interior of the updated coupe-like Mercedes-Benz GLE is no different from the regular version of the GLE. The designers simply moved it, modifying only the back. The main differences are in the sports seats, as well as in the artificial leather trim of the front panel, starting from the basic configuration. Once in the salon of the novelty, the first thing that catches your eye is two 12.3 ″ color displays, placed under a solid glass. One is responsible for the digital dashboard, the second for the multimedia system. As in the base, the system supports voice control and gesture commands.
The front seats of the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe have got massive lateral support, high backrest and a lot of adjustment functions. The standard list includes a memory for several modes, heating and blowing; for a fee, it is suggested to install the massage function. The second row of seats also did not go unnoticed, the folding ratio is 40/20/40, which made it possible to add adjustment for the reach of each section, as well as the backrest tilt. It is worth noting that in the top-end GLE coupe configuration, instead of a “sofa”, two separate chairs will be installed, and the central part will be occupied by a tunnel with various comfort control buttons and a massive armrest.
The technical characteristics of the coupe-like Mercedes GLE have also been updated, as in the regular model, the Coupe will be offered with three types of suspension: spring, pneumatic of the Airmatic class and modern E-Active Body Control, which can independently determine the road surface, adjust stiffness and control the struts depending on the inclination body roll. In other words, the last type of suspension is a hydropneumatic class operating from a 48 volt network. As for the power units of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, the starting models will be offered in three variations. Two configurations will get a diesel OM656 biturbo V6 engine with a volume of 2.9 liters. In particular, the GLE350d equipment will be able to produce 272 horses and 600 Nm of torque. The GLE400d version received 330 hp at its disposal. and 700 Nm of torque. In tandem with this engine, a 9-speed 9G-Tronic robotic transmission works. As for the drive, the novelty received a plug-in full version with a clutch on the front axle.
In addition to the usual variants of the Mercedes-Benz GLE coupe, the manufacturer also showed a charged version of the AMG GLE 53 Coupe. The main difference of this model is in the ribbed radiator grille, as well as other decorative elements inherent in the AMG brand. Under the hood of such a crossover, a gasoline V6 M256 is installed, with two turbochargers and an electric supercharger. It was this engine that was first used on the W222 S450. The power of such a unit is 435 horses, and the maximum torque is 520 Nm.
Interestingly, the engineers at the AMG GLE 53 Coupe succeeded in implementing a hybrid system that complements the combustion engine with a 48-volt starter-generator. The electric motor can deliver 22 horses and 250 Nm of torque. This is quite enough to accelerate the car in the first seconds of the start, as well as quickly start the engine within the framework of the Start / Stop system. The new hybrid engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission of the Speedshift TCT 9G class with a torque converter. It also installs a four-wheel drive with a clutch, improved brakes and a suspension of the AMG Ride Control + class.
If this is not enough and you want even more, then on board the AMG GLE 53 coupe, for a fee, you can install the AMG Active Ride Control chassis, equipped with an active anti-roll bar, which also works from the 48-volt on-board network. According to the manufacturer, other gasoline versions of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe crossover, including those with a V8 engine, will appear in the future.
It is possible that among the new products there will be a rechargeable hybrid version. They want to establish serial production of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe in the USA, at the Daimler plant. The sales of new items are scheduled for the first half of 2020, at the same time they will open a full list of configurations, characteristics, pricing policy.
